As you probably don't know, Pigby has been working on his reading lessons book. He could have finished a long time ago, but I was lazy and forgetful, taking weeks or even months off at times. Ever since he went to a friend's house and saw his friend's Nerf gun, he has been begging for one of his own. I knew how bad he wanted it, so we got this beauty and put it on the shelf where he could see it but not reach it. I told him when he finishes his reading lessons book that Nerf gun will be his.
Yes, that's right, I'm bribing him. And it's working! The first day he did about 20 lessons, the next day he did 22 lessons. That was about half of what we had left. He's done six lessons so far today. We have started on the two syllable words and it's going a little slower. I am reading and explaining more of the rules and he struggles with a few of the words, but for the most part I just point to the word and he reads it and then reads the sentences. The words "though, thought, through and thorough" are tripping him up a little, but I can understand that. We'll just have to practice those with flashcards.
I pulled out my copy of First Language Lessons. I'd planned on starting it when he hits lesson 200 in OPG. I spent last night reading through it. I will just say that I love it and I love Jessie Wise. The lessons are so simple and patient and beautiful. I looked through the lesson samples from grade 4 and Oh. My. Heck. I am so grateful that there are people so much smarter than me out there. I would have had no idea how to go about sentence diagramming and outlining without them. Also grateful that Pigby is young enough that he'll be able to use all their future resources (they are in the process of writing and publishing curricula for older grades).
Websites:
Just for fun, I thought I'd include some of my favorite websites.
WTM boards
100 days of real food
Plan to Eat
Mel's Kitchen Cafe
Scripture Memory System
I have more, but those are the standouts right now. They are making my life much easier.
How have I never even looked at First Language Lessons?! I knew it existed, I guess I just forgot. Anyway, I'm gonna go check out all those sites now.
ReplyDeletethe plan to eat one is just www.plantoeat.com. for some reason blogger was making a mess of it and every time I tried to correct it, it got worse. and looking through FLL, I realized I could have started it awhile ago, I didn't have to wait to hit lesson 200. oh well, I still probably won't add it until at least next week. Delaying a few weeks won't make such a big deal, but apparently there are people out there who don't teach formal grammar until middle or high school!!! Yeah, guess what my opinion is on that stance.
