May 2-6

BRENDEN

In math, Brenden continues to learn about division. He's been using the blocks a lot more, so I had him rewatch the video to hopefully jog his memory of how it works. Other than that, it's going really well. He still understands what he's doing, even if he prefers the use of the blocks.

In English, he did his narrations and reading. Also, someone gave me the brilliant idea to have him type his dictation, copywork, or narrations of the day as typing practice. This is good because our Typer Island subscription ran out and I was looking for ways to save money.

In history, he continues to learn about Thomas Jefferson. He's also learning about the signing of the constitution.

He didn't do French this week.

He didn't do engineering this week.

MALCOLM

Malcolm continues to fly through math with ease. We're almost to the end of addition problems and he can easily figure those out in head without much thought. He's even started helping Harper with hers.

In English, we learned about the hard and soft G, the hard and soft C, two, too, to, CK words that change to KE and how that changes the sound of the vowel, long u, a, e, i, o words.

Malcolm did not do history this week.

Malcolm went to tumbling this week. He did the same four rotations.

Malcolm did not do engineering this week.

April 25-29

BRENDEN

In math this week, Brenden worked on lesson 18. He learned how to divide with a remainder and how to check the answer by multiplying upside down. It was new information to me, but it's supposed to emphasize where the numbers are coming from when you divide and subtract.

For English, he read more books. He read all the books from Malcolm's Book Shark level.

In history, he did all his reading. He started reading about Thomas Jefferson this week.

He did not do French.

He did not do engineering.

He did spend a lot of time outside (a miracle for him) and we did yardwork. We learned an awful lot about nature this week.

MALCOLM

In math this week, his lesson was on the addition facts that equal 9. He did well in this lesson and didn't have any trouble understanding it.

In English this week, he did review in OPGTR and he learned the long O sound with a silent E. We also read the Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, A Bird Came Down the Walk, The Ass and His Driver.

In history, we're learning about Ancient Egypt. We're learning about their farming practices, their cities, their temples. He likes looking at all the pictures and reading the captions, but he says he doesn't like anything else. This is untrue, he likes more than he thinks he does, but all the attention he's paying.

He went to tumbling this week. He did all the regular rotations.

He did not do engineering this week.

We spent a lot of time outside doing yardwork. He was probably my biggest helper with weeding. He got his little trowel and tried helping me dig up all the dandelions. They are massive, so he didn't actually help all that much, but he sure tried his best, which is the important part.

April 18-22

This was Grammy's last week here. The kids spent a lot of time reading and playing with her, so there was less formal school and more relaxed and fun learning.

BRENDEN

This week in math, Brenden took his lesson 17 test.

In English, Brenden read a bunch of books from the library. His favorite is Foxtrot comics, his second favorite is Calvin and Hobbes.

Brenden did not do history this week.

Brenden did not do French this week.

Brenden did not do engineering this week.

MALCOLM

This week in English, we read The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, Kind Moon, The Dog, The Cox, and The Fox. Malcolm also did his copy work and reading lessons.

In math, he took his test from lesson 15. And because I discovered that lesson 14 was incomplete, I had him do that one too. He got all the questions right.

He did not do history this week.

He did go to tumbling this week. He did all his regular rotations.

He did not do engineering this week.

April 11-15

BRENDEN
Today in math, Brenden took his lesson 16 test. Lesson 16 was about doing division problems with remainders. Brenden got all those problems right, but he missed a few addition and subtraction problems.

In grammar, he reviewed how to diagram all four kinds of sentences. He also learned how to punctuate direct quotations at the beginning of sentences. He had to copy many of these kinds of sentences. In writing, he had to dictate a sentence with a direct quotation. In spelling, his list had "oo" words. He got them all correct on the pretest, except "goodness."

He did his history reading on his own. I'm not exactly sure what it was about. He also practiced his piano.

He didn't do French this week.

He didn't do engineering this week.

He had his SAGE test this week.

MALCOLM
In math, Malcolm started a new lesson. He's learning which addition facts add up to equal 10.

In reading lessons, he practiced words that have the long I sound. We also read the "Jabberwocky" poem. We're trying a sample of a new English curricula called "English Lessons Through Literature." For it, we read The Tale of Peter Rabbit and did a copywork sentence from it. Then we read an Aesop Fable, The Wolf and The Kid. Malcolm said both stories would be boring, but at the end, he loved them both.

In history, we read from the Usborne Time Traveler's Book about how the Ancient Egyptians used the Nile for farming. We also learned how they stored water to make sure they had enough to last all year. Malcolm keeps thinking he doesn't like history, because he didn't like one of the history books, but this one held his interest and he kept looking at all the pictures and asking a lot of questions.

He went to tumbling this week. Luckily my mom was here and able to take him, because Brenden and I were still at his SAGE test. I'm assuming his did his regular rotations.

He didn't do engineering this week.

March 28-April 1

BRENDEN
This week in math, Brenden started division problems with remainders. We couldn't find the plug for the DVD player, which was dead, so I had to teach him myself. I'm not sure I did it the best way, but we used the blocks and he understood it. He's using the blocks for every single problem, so this lesson will take us a bit.

In English, he learned "no" adverbs and he learned how to diagram contractions. He also learned how to punctuate direct quotations at the end of sentences. He did his narrations and copywork.

He did not do history this week.
He did not do engineering this week.
He did not do French this week.

MALCOLM
This week was less formal for Malcolm as I was really not feeling well. I barely made it through a few lessons with Brenden before I fell asleep. He spent hours each day reading books from the library.

The math he did was reading Life of Fred.
He didn't do history.
He didn't do engineering.
He went to UVU PE and tumbling.

March 21-25

BRENDEN

This week in math, Brenden did a different kind of standard and expanded notation than he's done before. He took his test and got 100%. He learned about vowel digraphs. In writing, he did his dictation, narration, and copywork. He did his spelling lists this week and got 100%.

He did his history reading, but I'm not sure what it was about. He was supposed to read part of Toliver's Secret, but he enjoyed it so much, he just went and read the whole thing.
He didn't do French.
He didn't do engineering

MALCOLM
In math this week, Malcolm worked on his doubles addition facts. In reading he worked on words with the long E sound. He did his copywork and did a good job on them.

He didn't do history.
He did go to UVU PE and tumbling.
He didn't do engineering.

March 14-18

BRENDEN

In math this week, he reviewed numbers in standard notation and converting them to the more drawn out notation. He then had to convert back. He also had to practice division problems where once he found the quotient, he had to multiply it by the original number, write it underneath, and subtract it from the answer. The answer was always zero, but I'm pretty sure it's getting him ready to do division problems with a remainder.

In history, he did most of his reading. At the end of the week, he'd lost his Beginner's American History book. I'd assigned him only part of the Om-Kas-Toe book, but he enjoyed it so much, he ended up reading the whole thing.

In English, he did his copywork. He did one review lesson in spelling and got to a new lesson, which was about adding endings to base words. He did a narration about spiders and then had to copy what I'd written.

He did not do French this week.

He did not do engineering this week.

MALCOLM

Malcolm was sick and injured this week and did not do school, other than a bunch of free reading.
