A long time ago, I saw this YouTube video on a friend's blog. No, I'm not tech savvy enough to know how to put it on my own blog. I had to have help just to get the ads on the side of my blog. (Thanks Michael!). But I thought it was a pretty cool video with a really good message.
Sometime later, I saw the guy on The Bonnie Hunt show. I didn't know it was the same guy, but I thought his message was (still) really good. I even blogged about it on my Xanga blog. I was trying to figure out what Pigby's strengths were. The only one I could come up with was that he was reading so early. I'm not exactly sure what else there are. But lately I've taken to responding in a different way when he says he wants something that is impossible now. You see, the kid wants rocket shoes. And I can't say that I blame him; they would be pretty wicked sweet. But instead of saying, "That's impossible, there are no such things" I've started saying, "Well, then you're going to have to grow up and invent them, because they haven't been made yet." I don't know if this is the correct response or even a good response. He gets kinda mad about it, but he gets mad over everything he can't have RIGHT NOW anyway, soooooo.....
Technology is so crazy advanced right now, who is to say that Pigby couldn't grow up and invent some rocket boots or something as equally awesome?
And then tonight on WTM boards, someone posted this link. Same guy. What I like about it is how there should be nothing to fear from failure if it teaches you something. Growing up, I took failing to be a very bad thing. Now whether this is due to my upbringing or because of the way the education system is or because of my personality or all of the above, I don't know for sure. But to this day, I will still beat myself up for every little mistake and every failing I have. Someday (maybe tomorrow) I will post the list I have of what I feel like I need to do before I can consider myself the perfect wife and mother. It's long.
I find myself thinking of Thomas Edison a lot. He was homeschooled. He was extremely creative. He was one of the best inventors ever. The quote I am most familiar with is: "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." That was about the light bulb. I really don't know if I could have kept going after attempt 9,995 failed. Honestly, I probably couldn't have made it past attempt 10. I guess on the road to "success" with raising Pigby, Digby and Chuck will be riddled with 10,000+ failures. But like Thomas Edison also said: "Many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." Corey keeps telling me I'm not a failure so long as I don't give up.
