This past Thursday, the charter school let out early. His teacher was kind enough to let me come early, instead of driving 30 minutes to pick him up, then wait around for 2 hours, then go to meet her, then drive home. I'm very thankful for that as Thursday was a SUPER busy day for me.
I got there and realized we had left the double stroller at home. *D'OH* Luckily we had the umbrella stroller and the doggy backpack/leash. Digby hurt his toe on Sunday and has been walking with a limp when he wears his shoes, so I had to carry him to the front door. He kept yelling, "I'm falling. I'm falling." As I ran, I yelled back, "I got you. I got you!"
We walked past the cafeteria where Pigby was sitting next to a girl. Yay for having someone to sit next to and talk with. So his teacher told me they did an assessment. Is anyone surprised he blew his reading test out of the water? I was not. She said the benchmark was 122 and he had a 188. I'm not sure what the scale was or what he was tested on; I just know he's above kindergarten. He was above in math too, but didn't know money yet. That's because we haven't worked on it. He also counted up to 30, which we both knew he could do better. She said it's common for kids to get bored/distracted and stop sooner than their limit.
Since I already know where he's at academically, my main reason for sending him to a charter school is so he can make friends. I know he has some trouble in this area; he's a shy extrovert. He loves being around kids and people, but he is scared to ask him to play. He's also told me a couple of stories that made me concerned. She said that everyone loves the days when he comes and that they're very excited to see him. He gets along really well with everyone. But he is too shy to ask people if he can join in their play; he usually waits until they ask him if he wants to play. We've done some role play with this, but I think we will do some more until he gets comfortable.
All in all, I am satisfied where he is and plan on sending him back next year. I am really liking the fact that he can have the school experience but most of his time is spent on academics at his pace. Poor Digby really wants to go to school too. He has to wait a few more years though.
